(WBZ June 1, 2007) BOSTON A
quick-moving storm left thousands of people without
power Friday afternoon.
The weather system brought with it severe
thunderstorms that raced across the state, but
despite the speed, the storm still managed to leave
about 2,900 people in the dark.
It was a disaster on Washington Street in Canton.
Police said the storm damaged some trees, which then
hit a couple of wires and knocked down three poles.
Two transformers also came down, and the hazardous
material inside the transformer used to keep it from
overheating leaked. Clean Harbors is on scene
cleaning that mess up.
Canton police also reported a water main break on
Washington Street. Due to the extensive damage on
the roadway, police say Washington Street will be
closed for the entire evening.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., WBZ's weather camera in
Worcester caught a huge lightning bolt light up the
evening sky. No damage or injuries were reported
from the incident.
In Scituate, a lightning bolt hit a triple-decker
home on High Street. The lightning strike caused
some smoke and broke several windows. No injuries
were reported.
WBZ viewer Michael Page of South Hingham sent in a
photo of a tree that fell on a house on Pioneer
Road. According to Page, wind gusts in the area
reached 30 MPH and in about 20 minutes, more than an
inch of rain flooded the streets.
