Donaldson Resigns
By Michael Page | December 10, 2008
Julie Donaldson, sports reporter at WHDH, resigned today. An e-mail to staffers at 7 said that she resigned for “personal reasons”.
You may remember that a few months ago Julie was off the air while she dealt with assault charges leveled against her former boyfriend.
I try to leave personal issues off of this website, so I won’t be posting anything further on this unless there is some direct impact on the television stations in Boston.

yeah that is sad. she was only on the air maybe twice after she returned. hope she’s ok.

The slamball slimeball who contributed to Julie’s fall is probably none the worse for wear, perhaps having found some other Tootsie. But I’m not quite getting why Julie would get dispatched to Gillette Stadium and NOT file the piece? Was the reason for it made clear?

Good Luck to her in whatever she decides to do in the future! Best wishes.

It is sad to see a professional with so much talent and potential have to leave a large market like Boston because of the detrimental actions of an alcohol induced man. His drunken actions that night ruined the future she had in Boston and potentially the national scene. I agree whole heartedly with her decision to spend time with her family and get her life back in order before proceeding forward. I wish her the best of luck.

I wish Julie all the best in whatever she does now that she has left Channel 7. Any Chance that Channel 7 Might pick up Bob Lobel for sports reporter?
December 13th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Highly unlikely.

last i heard about bob lobel he is confined to a wheelchair after 2 back surgeys within 5 months of leaving wbz. bob is slowing rehabbing. i really doubt whdh would bring in bob

There are way too many talented and out-of-work TV sports journalists out there to justify bringing back a fossil like Lobel. He might be a ‘real swell guy,’ but his run at WBZ was absolutely unprecedented by today’s standards. His tenure and his salary will never be seen again in TV news, so no tears being shed on this end.

Chris, I agree. Boston has seen enough of Bob, he’s past his prime.
Not to mention, he doesn’t exactly have the “7 look.”
They will probably higher another woman. Remember Wendi Nix, I loved her.

Bob Lobel ???
He cannot have anymore collagen injections or face lifts at his age.
Stick a fork in him! He’s done!!

wendi nix now works for espn.

Speaking of female sportscasters, one who’s seemed to have fallen off the planet is Kristen Mastroianni. She was far from old and I don’t believe she’s left for another market, either. Last I saw of her was on NECN/WCVB, but that was a few years ago. She wasn’t too bad.

i think kristen is a stay at home mother now

WHDH used a guy from a Worcester station named Kevin Shea while Donaldson was out. He’s a local guy who’s very popular in the Worcester market. I’d like to see him back at WHDH full-time now that Donaldson has resigned.
December 16th, 2008 at 6:43 am
kevin is good and i hope whdh signs him up full time too but they most likey will find a lady
December 16th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Worcester has a market? Who knew.
December 17th, 2008 at 12:00 am
No, it is part of the Boston DMA.
December 18th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Kevin Shea would be a solid choice – he is beloved out in Worcester. I think he is is a local guy as well. Much nicer having folks that actually grew up here.

What type of credibility does this woman have on Boston Tv when it is docuemented in the press that she drinks excessively and had a sex tape lingering over her reputation. I am deeply sorry about her domestic violence problem but what decent woman allows a tape to be made of her having sex with her boyfriend and is seen up and down Newbury St. hitting the mixed drinks heavily.

I have watched channel 7 news/sports for many, many years as a woman.
Instead of going with a beauty queen to report sports, PLEASE go with someone who can report passionately about sports with a great deal of knowledge such as Kevin Shea. He is a no nonsense type of person who has earned a great deal of respect in the Worcester area.
No woman deserves to go through what Donaldson has been through with a boyfriend. However, I don’t believe she was the best fit as a sportscaster for the Boston area.

I see Kevin Shea from Worcester News Tonight is back at WHDH. Well, it’s good to see they’re doing something right.
December 31st, 2008 at 12:03 pm
I feel sorry for Julie. Kevin Shea is fantastic though. Like the Local Boys.

Kevin Shea is a fantastic sports reporter and would be a great addition to the WHDH team. He already is doing a great job for them now….they need hold on to him! Worcester is proud of you Kevin!!!

Shea is a local guy. Graduated from Acton Boxboro and Bentley College.
