Red Sox Coverage…Game Ratings
By Michael Page | October 29, 2007
Johnny Diaz at the Globe posted these numbers a few days ago in regard to the World Series game ratings. FOX 25, who was lucky enough to have the games, had a total of nearly 1.8 million viewers for game 1 of the World Series, with about the same number for game 2. On Sunday night for game 4, just over 2 million people around Boston tuned in.
The week before, for October 15-21, FOX had the top 5 rated programs in Boston…all which were ALCS games.
If you noticed, FOX 25 was taking advantage of the huge viewership to promote its new 11 PM newscasts which begins just in time for the November sweeps month. More on the detailed numbers can be found here.

I was touched that Big Papi cried at the end of his game journey.

The TV media folks were awful after the game…largely incoherent, asking the same question (“How does it feel?”), and generally tripping all over each other while grabbing players and forcing them into meaningless ‘How does it feel?’ interviews. No one was worse than Bob Lobel, who clearly gives new meaning to the phrase, “I have tenure and this job is forever mine.” Talk about a station in desperate need of a sea change. Coming in a close second was Lobel’s heir apparent, Steve Burton. His obnoxious aggressiveness in grabbing after dog-tired players and team officials, only to come up with even MORE ‘How does it feel’ questions, pointed out two clear facts: There are WAY too many sports ‘journalists’ out there on the TV side, and they’re all varying degrees of ‘bad.’

I tend to agree. While I love seeing the celebration, the players really could care less about talking to the media, so it seems like a waste of everyone’s time to try and get anything good out of them at such an exciting time for them.

Have to give props to the techs who put together the coverage of the bus ride back from Logan Airport. As a native of Brighton now living in Virginia, it was great to watch the coverage on my PC. Can’t wait for the Duck Parade!

Great point, this is one of the first events where nearly every station has online coverage. A few raw vid feeds still made it online for WBZ, which does not always look good for the anchors.

Those helicopter shots during the Rolling Rally were amazing. I watched thebostonchannel.com on my office PC here in Martinsburg, WV. I’m glad the announcers decided to let the crowd noise carry the excitement of the event. God bless “streaming video!”
