Todd On in Salt Lake City
By Michael Page | March 25, 2007
After getting a tip from a reader that Todd Gross may have been doing some work at ABC 4 (KTVX) in Salt Lake City, UT, I did some looking around and found that he had in fact been on air there earlier this week during the morning show. The station’s executive producer tells me “Todd has permanently joined our morning news program, Good Morning Utah, as our morning meteorologist.” Most recently, Todd had been working at WWLP-TV in Springfield. Todd will still be around the Boston area, so he has not flown away quite yet and remains very active in Boston Weather. I wish the best to Todd as he begins a new adventure!
Watch Todd on ABC 4 (toward the end of the video)

It seems that, aside from military families, TV news people pretty much are the biggest nomads out there…popping up in one city or another as a morsel of work becomes available. The sad saga of WBZ’s Ken Barlow and his family points out that the nomad life isn’t for everyone. I like Todd Gross and have found his forecasts to be good. Further, he never seemed to grate on the eyes or ears like so many TV news people do in trying to ‘force-fit’ themselves into their roles. This is true for reporters, anchors, and weather folks. But Todd was an OK guy and I hope his traveling carnival finds a home somewhere.

Todd Gross was a great guy, I don’t understand he left/WHDH Let him go.
He has a website called http://www.toddgross.com/ and has a video clip introducing himself to all of those on the net.

He was let go by WHDH because they wanted to go in a “new direction”. See previous posts on this site for more.

What is the “sad saga” with Ken Barlow and his family?

I too miss Todd Gross. It is channel 7s loss!

The ‘sad saga,’ as I interpret it, is that his family hated it in Boston and moved back to Minneapolis. I figure the weather and the politics are the same in either case, so must be something else
. Anyway, that’s the risk when TV news people bounce around from market to market: It doesn’t always work. In Ken’s situation, not only was his family not happy here, Ken himself wasn’t really ‘welcomed’ with open arms by the WBZ people. I only report what was reported, but there was (is?) a chill between Ken and his WBZ ‘family.’ I would be shocked if Ken remains the WBZ guy past the summer.

Wow! Thanks for the information. Very interesting.

That’s too bad. I really like Ken’s style – it fits with BZ’s style and that of the Boston market. Surprised about the family going to Minn – I got the impression his last job was in Philly…?

with all the moving around TV news people end up doing–and it seems like there’s more of it now than ever–some fits are bound to be misses. I mean, you can be great & everything but be ostracized at your new ‘home’ because the rest of the ‘talent’ liked the other guy better. I’m sure that goes on, and it’s sad that it does because often these are big geographical moves people (and their families) are making. I don’t think I could warm up to anyone on TV news–whatever the role–if they wore a ‘I’m-not-from-around-here’ banner. People may not be ‘from around here,’ but they have to disguise that as best they can. Part of that means pronouncing ‘Worcester’ and ‘Leominster’ correctly. Nothing brands you more than botching the pronounciation of a town name.

Chris,
That’s interesting you bring that up. I noticed Dylan Dreyer on channel 7 said Peabody incorrectly a few times.
March 28th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
Dylan Dreyer…hmmmm…not too sure about her yet. I liked Chikaye (sp?) a lot better!

I’m not from this industry…I call myself an interested observer. But in that role I see what works for me as a ‘customer’ and what doesn’t. It’s not an exact science; some weather person or sports guy or anchor could be a big favorite despite screwing up the name ‘Peabody.’ You just never know what the right ‘recipe’ will end up being. A little more ‘paprika’ might ruin one recipe but make another one great.

I saw Mark Rosenthal on NECN Monday night filling in for Tim Kelly. It was great seeing him. I am surprised not other local station has picked him up. Maybe he will be Ken Barlows replacement if he chooses to leave WBZ. Now that would be great!

Agree with you on Mark Rosenthal. He’s talented, professional and fun. Would be good to have him back, as he’s been an asset to weatherfans in the area for 30 years.

Mark Rosenthal has to be one of the greatest forecasters southern New England has ever had, I’d like to see him return to a full time duty here. Barry Burbank is my second favorite, as he is almost always correct and always examines every possibility before coming to a conclusion. Pete Bouchard has moved up to third place, and I must say he had one of the best personalities of the southern New England meteorologists. I personally don’t like Ken Barlow, he can’t forecast thunderstorms for beans! Three times this summer he had blown the forecast big time. I remember one time in particular it was early evening and he was on the 6pm newcast and said no chance of storms, even though there were some forming in Connecticuit and more in western New York. An hour later the storms in Connecticuit moved through with heavy downpours. He did’nt admit his mistake, and worse at the 11 p.m. newscast as the second line was entering western mass with numerous severe warning he dismissed them by saying that they would die out. At 2am theyrolled through our area with strong winds and 3/4 inch hail! He is fairly accurate in the Winter, but in Summer I would listen to Pete.

Television meteorology has felt a tad naked since Schwoegler was marched off…
