Wednesday, April 14th, 2010There are several award related announcements to be made, so I am going to lump them into one post: The Radio Television Digital News Association recently announced the regional 2010 Edward R. Murrow Award winners. Here are the Boston winners from Region 10 (New England): Overall Excellence: WCVB Video Breaking News Coverage: WCVB MBTA Green [...]
WCVB Continues to Dominate
Thursday, April 1st, 2010The viewership numbers for March 2010 are in, and WCVB is on top yet again. The following numbers are adults 2+ Monday-Friday. A few things to note: – I included the numbers for 7:30 PM to show how Chronicle stacks up against syndicated programs on other stations since it has been a topic of discussion [...]
WHDH Streaming Live
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010Live streaming newscasts are back at WHDH.com. A few years ago newscasts were shown online, but until now they have been noticeably absent. This is another great addition for their website. Check out the stream here.
Really Trying to Make it “Your Newscast”
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009Over the past couple of months, WHDH has been really touting its slogan “Your Newscast”. They have encouraged feedback and interaction on facebook, twitter and skype arguably more than other stations who are more reliant on their own websites. Now, with Google’s unveiling of a new tool called “YouTube Direct”, WHDH/WLVI is moving forward with [...]
Traditional Media Faces Evolution, Not Extinction
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009A new opinion survey by Fisher College and Howell Communications found that traditional media such as newspapers and television news are far from extinct in Boston. Of the survey’s 400 Greater Boston 18+ respondents, 74% said they receive the news “regularly” from TV news, 50% said they received news regularly from newspapers, and 44% said [...]
July Book ’09
Friday, July 31st, 2009Although the July ratings period is probably the least important all year, it is still interesting to check in and see how the various stations did. Remember, these sweeps periods are somewhat trivial because Boston is in a people metered market (meaning data comes in each day). The numbers below are Live P2+ numbers. 5 [...]
Dick Albert to be Honored at Local Emmys
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009The Boston/New England chapter of the National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences will hold the 32nd Emmy awards this Saturday May 30th in Boston. The awards ceremony, which will be hosted by Tom Bergeron, will honor various stations for notable work over the past year. Dick Albert, long time WCVB meteorologist, will receive the [...]
Sweeps Ends with No Major Shocks
Friday, May 22nd, 2009The May sweeps period is over, and there really weren’t many surprises. Just as we have seen in last books, WHDH has picked up lots of ground to win the morning hours. WCVB, on the other hand, has been slipping as of late, but still remains in second place overall. Midday and the early evening [...]
Friday Night Awards, Breaking News
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009Friday evening was a busy one for local news outlets. First, here’s the good news that came from Channel 5. “WCVB-TV/DT Channel 5 won a total of nine awards at the annual Associated Press/regional Edward R. Murrow banquet Friday night. WCVB was honored as STATION OF THE YEAR by the AP at the event and [...]
Sunbeam Goes Out on a Limb Again
Friday, May 1st, 2009Just weeks after WHDH/WLVI’s owner, Sunbeam, tried to defy NBC by not airing Jay Leno’s new fall show in Boston, owner Ed Ansin has ventured into new uncharted waters. Today’s Miami Herald reports that Sunbeam has filed a lawsuit against Nielsen Media Research, the company responsible for reporting TV ratings. In the lawsuit, Sunbeam alleges that Nielsen [...]
